With the Euros and the Olympics firmly in the rear-view mirror, the real sporting highlight of the year gets underway this weekend when the Meath club championship kicks off.

Longwood will once again ply their trade in the Intermediate Football Championship and, like all clubs, begin their campaign with a sense of optimism and hope.

The boys have been drawn in Group B with Trim, Moylagh and Clann Na nGael. All three opponents will present a formidable challenge. But we can be sure that none of them will be enthralled at the idea of facing a Longwood team noted for its tenacity and never say die spirit.

The opening round sees Longwood travel the short distance to Clonard on Friday evening to square up to Clann Na nGael. If you think this fixture has a familiar ring to it, you are absolutely correct; the sides met in the group stages of last year’s championship. Indeed, that game also took place in Clonard with Clann Na nGael securing victory thanks to a late goal.

So, Longwood will certainly not lack for motivation.

Unfortunately, due to ongoing Covid restrictions, attendances are restricted so do not delay if you wish to purchase a ticket.

Best of luck to all the players and management on Friday.
