Longwood 2-15  Navan O'Mahonys 2-13

Longwood picked up their 2nd win of this year's ACHL Div 2 competition with a hard fought win over Navan O'Mahonys on Sunday last.

The sides will meet again later on this year in the newly structured senior hurling championship and, if this encounter is anything to go by, it could be one of the games of the championship.

Both sides were fully committed and there was plenty of fast attacking play even though the rough surface was contributing to some handling errors.

Navan O'Mahonys shaded the 1st half mainly due to the accuracy of Paddy Skehan who pointed frees from a variety of angles while Longwood got most of their scores from play with Karl Ennis in particular hitting a rich vein getting 0-4 and Anthony Healy driving through the O'Mahonys defence to goal.

Longwood continued to pick off scores early in the second half and opened up a sizeable lead. Healy began to find his range with the frees and when Gavin Griffith was pulled down in the O'Mahonys square, a converted Healy penalty looked like O'Mahonys day was done. To their credit, Navan battled on and when Cormac Reilly goaled after picking up a loose ball on the Longwood 21 yard line, followed by a 2nd goal in almost identical circumstances minutes later, the game was all square again.

With 2 minutes to play, Longwood showed that bit more composure though and scored a point from distance through Karl Ennis and then won possession from the puck out and retained that possession until Ross Kerrigan found himself in time and space to fire over the insurance point. Eoin Lynch at centre half back was outstanding throughout for Longwood, as was Joe Stenson to his left and Karl Ennis in midfield.

Longwood: Michael Healy, Paul Gill, Enda Dixon, Johnny Furey, Joe Stenson, Mark Kennedy, Ryan Moore, Niall Mulvey, Karl Ennis, Bob Maguire, Eoin Lynch, Anthony Healy, Aaron Ennis, Ross Kerrigan, Gavin Griffith.

Subs:Keith Masterson for Niall Mulvey (ht), Jim Dorran for Aaron Ennis
